Connecting Globally with NASA
Last year our Year 1 /2 students had the opportunity to share their learning with a Scientist/Geobiologist, from NASA.
Following their video link, the children then sent a video of their Mars Learning Showcase to Dr Darlene Lim, explaining their learning and thinking.
The children and staff have received a lovely letter of acknowledgment back from Dr Lim.
It was an absolute thrill for me to participate in such a thoughtful and impactful scholastic activity. The emphasis on nurturing curiosity, risk taking, and innovation at Grovedale Primary School was truly inspiring. The Learning Expo connected the children to not only the opportunity to explore science and engineering, but also to a community of scientists, engineers and explorers around the world who are taking on similar tasks in a variety of settings, such as at NASA. Thank you for the opportunity to experience such a creative and engaging program.

Connecting and Acting Globally: A Mini Library from Geelong to Malaysia
A school with a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, Grovedale West PS wanted to allow teachers more creativity and students more learning opportunities. Using a High Impact Teaching Strategy, Grades 1 & 2 teachers designed an authentic and rich project around one student’s dream of building a mini-library for the Malaysian community he was returning to, after beginning his education at Grovedale West PS. The teachers designed learning experiences for their students, helping them collect books, write persuasive letters to publishers, design and write their own stories, and organise fundraisers to pay for shipping over 600 books to Kuala Lumpur. Parents were involved, responding to comments and provocations on the class blog, while students communicated and persuaded different audiences to contribute. A mini-library has now been set up in Kuala Lumpur. There are negotiations underway with Malaysian education authorities to create a mobile library that can take the books out to suburban children. Grovedale West students are able to articulate how their actions have made a difference to their lives and the lives of others.

Learning Ripples
Our Year 5/6 students have developed a learning model that is being used throughout the school for students to understand themselves as learners and to recognise the supports and opportunities available to them. They have engaged in comprehensive analysis of how we learn and have shaped this model though an authentic collaboration with their teachers. Their model was presented at a conference in Vancouver Canada and there is considerable interest in the work of the students. It is a great example of student agency and voice in learning
